How to Use AI Scene and Moment Detection to Find Your Best Clips
Stop scrubbing through hours of footage — OpenClip's AI analyzes your entire video and surfaces the moments most likely to go viral.
Prerequisites
- An active OpenClip account (Starter, Pro, or Business plan)
- A long-form video file (MP4, MOV, or similar) or a direct video URL
- Video with clear spoken content — the AI analyzes transcripts, so speech-heavy content performs best
- Basic understanding of which social platforms you're targeting with your clips
Steps
Understand what OpenClip's scene detection actually does
OpenClip doesn't detect scene changes the way traditional video editors do (e.g., by looking for visual cuts). Instead, OpenClip uses AI to analyze your video's transcript and score every possible segment by three key dimensions: hook strength (does it grab attention immediately?), narrative completeness (does it tell a complete mini-story with a beginning, middle, and end?), and viral potential (is the content surprising, emotionally resonant, or highly shareable?). The result is a ranked list of clip candidates — typically 5 to 15 per video.
Tip: Because detection is transcript-driven, the quality of your AI transcription directly affects the quality of clip detection. A well-reviewed transcript leads to better clip candidates.
Upload your long-form video
Log in to OpenClip and upload your long-form video — a YouTube video, podcast recording, webinar, interview, or any long content. Paste a video URL or upload a file directly. OpenClip will begin transcribing and processing your video.
Tip: Longer videos (30 minutes or more) tend to yield more diverse clip candidates because there is more content for the AI to analyze. Short videos under 10 minutes may yield fewer candidates.
Wait for AI processing to complete
OpenClip runs transcription, speaker diarization, face detection, and viral moment scoring in sequence. You'll be notified when your video is fully processed and clip candidates are ready. For very long videos, this may take several minutes.
Tip: Use batch processing to upload multiple long-form videos at once. All videos process in parallel, so you're not waiting one-by-one.
Review your ranked clip candidates
Once processing is complete, OpenClip presents a list of clip candidates ranked by their AI-generated viral score. Each candidate shows the clip's start and end time, a score summary, and a preview. The scores reflect hook strength, narrative completeness, and viral potential — so a high-scoring clip has a strong opening, tells a complete story, and has shareable qualities.
Tip: Don't skip low-scoring candidates automatically. Sometimes a niche or highly specific clip that scores lower overall is perfect for a targeted audience even if it isn't broadly viral.
Preview and select clips to export
Watch a preview of each clip candidate to verify it makes sense as a standalone piece of content. The AI scores are a strong guide, but your human judgment about your audience and platform matters too. Select the clips you want to export.
Tip: Look for clips that have a strong first three seconds — that's your hook on TikTok and Reels. If the clip starts mid-thought, consider whether the AI found the right start point or if a slight trim would help.
Apply captions and speaker tracking
For each selected clip, choose your caption preset (Default, Dan, Pop, Beast, etc.) and confirm the speaker tracking settings. OpenClip will apply word-level captions and dynamic speaker cropping to your clips at export.
Tip: Captions are not optional for social media performance. Studies consistently show that a large percentage of social video is watched without sound — captions keep those viewers engaged.
Export in your target format
Choose your export aspect ratio: 9:16 for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels; and Twitter; . You can export multiple formats for the same clip simultaneously. OpenClip renders each clip with captions burned in and speaker tracking applied.
Tip: For maximum reach, export each clip in at least 9:16 vertical formats. This covers the major short-form platforms without requiring you to re-process the video.
