Streaming Setup Guide: Go Live and Repurpose Your Content

Choose your streaming platform

Before configuring any settings, decide where you are streaming. The most common platforms are Twitch (gaming and live communities), YouTube Live (broad audience, great VOD retention), and LinkedIn Live (B2B and professional content). Each platform has different recommended encoder settings, audience demographics, and VOD policies. YouTube Live and LinkedIn Live are particularly valuable for repurposing because they save your stream as a VOD that you can later clip with OpenClip.

Tip: If you want to repurpose your streams into short-form clips, stream to YouTube Live — it stores your VOD indefinitely and makes downloading the recording straightforward.

Select and configure your encoder software

Your encoder software captures your screen, webcam, and audio and sends the stream to the platform. OBS Studio is the most popular free option and works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Streamlabs OBS offers a more beginner-friendly interface. XSplit is a paid alternative with a simpler workflow. In your encoder, you will configure output resolution, bitrate, and encoder (hardware or software). For most setups, use x264 software encoding or NVENC if you have an NVIDIA GPU.

Tip: OBS Studio is free, highly configurable, and the industry standard. Start with OBS before considering paid alternatives.

Configure your stream output settings

In OBS or your encoder, navigate to Settings > Output. Set the encoder to x264 (CPU) or NVENC/AMF (GPU). Set the bitrate: 4,500–6,000 kbps for 1080p 30fps streaming; 6,000–8,000 kbps for 1080p 60fps. Keyframe interval must be set to 2 seconds — this is required by Twitch and recommended by YouTube. Set the encoding preset to 'veryfast' or 'faster' to balance quality and CPU load. For audio, use 160 kbps AAC.

Tip: If you experience dropped frames during streaming, lower your bitrate by 500–1,000 kbps increments until the stream stabilizes.

Set up your video sources

In OBS, add your video sources in the Sources panel. For a talking-head or educational stream, add a Video Capture Device (your webcam or capture card). For gaming or screen content, add a Game Capture or Display Capture source. Position your webcam feed in a corner or side of the frame if you are streaming screen content. Use a green screen (chroma key) to remove the webcam background for a cleaner look. Test your scene layout before going live.

Tip: Position your face in the upper-left or lower-right corner of the frame — these positions are least likely to overlap with game UI or presentation content.

Optimize your audio setup

Audio quality matters more than video quality for viewer retention. Use a USB or XLR microphone rather than a built-in laptop mic. In OBS Audio Settings, set sample rate to 44.1 kHz. Add a noise suppression filter to your microphone source to reduce background noise. Set your microphone gain so your voice peaks around -12 dB to -6 dB in the audio mixer. Wear headphones to prevent echo from your speakers being picked up by the mic.

Tip: A $50–100 USB condenser mic (like the Blue Snowball or HyperX SoloCast) is a massive upgrade over any built-in microphone.

Configure your stream settings in the platform dashboard

Log into your streaming platform and configure your stream key, title, description, and category before going live. On YouTube Live, enable DVR (allows viewers to rewind) and set the stream to 'Public' or 'Unlisted' depending on your audience. Enable automatic archive recording so your VOD is saved. On Twitch, set your stream category, tags, and enable VOD storage in your channel settings.

Tip: Write a detailed stream title and description with keywords — this helps with discoverability both during and after the live stream.

Record a local backup simultaneously

Always record a local copy of your stream alongside the live broadcast. In OBS, go to Settings > Output > Recording and configure a separate recording output. Record locally at a higher quality than you stream — use a bitrate of 20,000–50,000 kbps for recording while streaming at 6,000 kbps. This local recording will be your source file for repurposing into clips. MP4 or MKV with H.264 encoding works well for local recordings.

Tip: Set OBS to record in MKV format locally — if OBS crashes during recording, MKV files can be recovered while MP4 files may be corrupted.
